Profile
Anne Mette Fisker-Nielsen is a social anthropologist focusing on politics, religion and civil society in Japan. Born in Denmark, she lived in the UK, Hong Kong, and Japan. She received a PhD in Social Anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies in 2008 with a focus on Japanese politics and religion and published a monograph researching Komeito and its youth supporters in coalition politics from 2003 to 2010. Her recent research has focused on the polarisation of security debates in Japan and the politics of Othering, and she is currently conducting research for a three year JSPS funded project on local politics and civil society in Okinawa. She taught social anthropology and on Japanese society and culture at SOAS until July 2017 when she moved to Japan to become Associate Professor in Social Anthropology in the Department of Humanities at Soka University.
